With a few Aussies from Melbourne on the Wholegrain team, the devastating bushfires in Australia seem a lot closer to home. Sadly, it has been reported that over one billion animals have been killed in the bushfires. We have decided that we are going to take action and raise funds for three charities, who together will help to tackle the immediate and long term effects of climate change, as well as protect the endangered wildlife that have been so heavily affected by the fires.
Who we are supporting and why
We have decided to support three charities that are doing their bit for the Australian bushfires. In our opinion it is important to support charities that can help with the immediate problems, develop strategies and educate people on the bigger picture (climate change) and also support and care for the wildlife that have been so terribly affected in this disaster.
1. We are supporting The Climate Council Australia, who provides the Australian public with expert advice and solutions to tackle climate change. Therefore, helping to deal with the bigger problem which is climate change.
2. We will also be supporting Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service (WIRES) who are rescuing and caring for wildlife affected in the bushfires.
3. Last but not least, we will be supporting The Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief Who are helping by supporting communities to prepare, respond and recover from the bushfires. They have a fantastic diagram on their website that shows you where the funds from your donation will go.
What we’re doing about it
Our team of 13 will be hosting a vegan bake sale on the 23rd of January, just in time for Australia Day. Why vegan you may ask? Well, we think that it is important to stay true to what we believe in and that’s sustainability! So, we’re hoping to make our fundraising effort as low carbon as possible. All of the proceeds will be equally donated to the the above mentioned charities. Our wonderful Designer Alex has created a banner that we we will continue to display at the top of our website until the fires end. This banner has direct links to the websites of each of the above charities, so that you can donate if you wish.
How can you help?
We understand that not everyone can afford to donate money to charity, but there’s plenty of other ways that you can help. Raising awareness is key, so simply start a conversation with those around you. You never know how others may be able to help. We really believe that small actions lead to big outcomes, so why not check out our pieces on carbon syncing, sustainable travel and things you can do to reduce your personal carbon emissions.
