What are we doing to combat climate change?

Written by Rachael B. - September 4, 2018

This Saturday, 8th September, is Climate Change day. Led by Rise for Climate, it is a global movement to mobilise governments around the world to meet targets for ending the era of fossil fuels and transitioning to 100% renewable energy worldwide.

We’re always passionate about supporting any initiatives that raise awareness around creating a more sustainable and equitable world, and doing what we can to combat climate change is part of who we are as an organisation.

Why 8th September?

Next week (12 – 14 September), the Global Climate Action Summit is being held in the US, and this presents a unique opportunity to pressure local governments and institutions to raise their ambition and do more for climate action.

If all local governments make a commitment to building 100% renewable energy and stopping any new dirty energy projects in their community, this can bring us closer to meeting the 2020 threshold for meeting global targets to tackle the climate crisis.

Our ongoing actions to address climate change

As a web design agency, one of the ways we can contribute to a reduction in carbon emissions caused by the internet, is to be a leading voice when it comes to ‘greening’ the web. From our MD Tom’s initial talk on zero carbon WordPress at last Year’s WordCamp Europe, to the recent launch of our website carbon calculator (a world first) and the subsequent redesign of our website to make it even more efficient, we’re always looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint.

Internally, we have a range of initiatives to ensure our carbon footprint remains low, including a self-imposed carbon tax, providing staff members with incentives for using renewable energy at home, offering free access to London’s Santander Cycles for all team members and prioritising efficient, low emission transport (we never fly for business). Our aim is to become a truly zero carbon business by 2026. You can learn more about our measurable goals and the all the actions we’re taking to achieve them over on our mission and values page.

Of course our commitment to combating climate change goes beyond our clients and team members, as we want to ensure that our work leaves as wide a positive impact as possible. To this end, we share our work widely (all our internal projects are open source), and we are a certified B Corporation. This certification holds us to account against sustainability targets and allows us to connect and collaborate with like-minded organisations equally passionate about sustainability. This year, we also became members of 1% for the Planet, pledging our commitment to share 1% of our revenue with environmental charities and nonprofits working towards a more sustainable world.
