Curiously Green will soon be even more curious…
|
Welcome back to the first edition of the newsletter since our summer hiatus. Glad to have you here!
I’m writing this introduction from my home in the French Alps where hints of the changing seasons are visible everywhere. Leaves are changing the colour palette of the landscape, squirrels are busily stocking their winter larders and stags are bellowing all around us.
Curiously Green is mirroring this season of change. We have spent the summer planning and designing a new platform for our “curious” content. Our design, UX and dev teams have been flexing their creative muscles. The results are truly innovative, fresh and exciting. I can’t wait to share more details with you as the launch gets closer.
Fear not though, the newsletter isn’t going anywhere! We will continue to publish the best digital sustainability content that we can find on a monthly basis.
I hope you enjoy issue #57.

UN Digital Economy Report 2024
This is the first DER from the UN that focuses on the environmental footprint of digitalisation. Regardless of your area of interest within the digital realm, this report from the UN is an incredibly important read. It covers the whole life cycle of digitalisation using the most up to date research available.
It provides a timely reminder that all human activity needs to take place within planetary boundaries digitisation included.

AI Environmental Impact Report
An insightful and balanced briefing from the Green Web Foundation. Chris Adams and Hannah Smith produced the report to “help people with a responsibility for AI projects understand the considerations around their direct negative environmental impact arising from AI. We cover what to be mindful of, what mitigating strategies are available today, and their limitations.”
The 3 recommendations they make can provide the cornerstones to practical and considered AI usage policies for businesses and organisations.

Notes from the GreenIO conference
Tom attended the Green IO conference this month and his takeaways closely mirrored those of Michelle Barker in this blog post. It was heartening to hear that themes such as consensus lead action, action against greenwashing and the need to consider more than just carbon were all featured during the action packed event.
If you missed the event you can find a video highlights package from Architect Tomorrow, here.

Wholegrain host UK premier screening of documentary film "Responsible"
|
"Capitalism is the most powerful manmade force on this planet"
Earlier in the summer Wholegrain were proud to host the UK premiere of the documentary Responsible. The documentary, produced by recruitment and employment experts Welcome To the Jungle and directed by Tristan Lochon, looks at whether there is any such thing as a truly responsible business.
Featuring businesses such as Patagonia, Tony’s Chocoloney, the Positive Internet Company and of course Wholegrain Digital it portrays an optimistic view of what business could and should look like, if it focussed on people and planet over profit.
For a full rundown of the two screenings and further information of the film, check out the post above, written by Anneliese, Wholegrain’s account manager.

Finally, friend of the newsletter Dryden Williams has created a brilliant test site showcasing carbon aware web design. The site changes its features based on live grid intensity. A perfect demonstration of how to mitigate against your site being viewed on a dirty grid…
