It’s natural to assume that when you buy a new website and it is launched on the web by your web design agency, that it should be finished. Just like if you buy a car, or a jumper, or a work of art, you wouldn’t accept a half finished product.
I bet your intial reaction to that question is a big fat NO! But think again. A website is different from nearly all other products (with the acception of LEGO), because it can adapt over time. And since your needs are always changing and you are always learning more about your market, the ability to improve your website over time is a huge advantage.
After all, one of the main reasons that people buy new products is because the old ones no longer meet their needs. In contrast, websites can adapt to keep up with your changing business, so that you don’t need to buy a new one.
Because declaring that your website is finished is to declare that it will never change, and that means that it will never improve. All good business managers know that continuous improvement is essential for long term success, so you wouldn’t want a website that can’t improve like the rest of your business. If you declare your website finished, then it will start becoming out of date the day that you launch it. The same reason that kids get bored of all their toys, but yet keep playing with their Lego for years.

If you have invested time and money in a website, then the last thing you want to do is sit back and watch it grow old. You should constantly analyse the things that are working well and not so well, take on board customer feedback and brainstorm new ideas so that you can ensure that your website is always the best it can be.
By doing that, you’ll maximise your websites lifespan and ensure that it is always performing to its full potential.
So if you want your website to be the best in your industry, make sure that it is never finished!
